Austin TX Stuff

While we were stuck in Austin (due to the awning disaster) we were able to do quite a bit of sightseeing! Note – we left on 8/25 and headed to Shreveport LA! This was a good move as we went northeast from Hurricane Henry! We were supposed to be in Houston but of course we cancelled those plans! The next day Austin was hit with a lot of rain so the timing couldn’t have been better!

Austin Music Crawl

This is something we don’t normally do but wanted to experience the music that Austin had to offer – so we did a music crawl! It was offered by this local touring company and on a Friday night we went to 3 different clubs. Our favorite was the Skylark Lounge.

This was awesome! We listened to the Reverent Few who was terrific. We need to more of this!

LBJ Library

Right on the Texas University campus was the LBJ Library. Another thing we don’t normally do but glad we did! This place is massive! Has 4 floors of nothing but artifacts collected during his presidency. They even had a life size replica of the Oval Office the way it looked when he was president. Very educational concerning all of the Civil Rights work he did for this country. We highly recommend visiting this awesome place!

Texas State Capital

We went on a tour of the state capital building. It was massive and very historical. Lots of paintings and images concerning how Texas became a state. We even got to tour the State Senate and House legislative halls. Interesting fact – they only meet every 2 years for 140 days! That is how efficient they are! Illinois could learn from this…

Texas Longhorn Caverns

This is 60 miles northwest of Austin. It was a great motorcycle ride even though it was over 100 degrees. We had a tour of this cave and it was great! Made friends with some bats (well Patti did anyway) and it was incredible to see the different parts of the cave and the quartz crystals were huge!
